Susana Botana is a Spanish sculptor who works primarily with stone, as well as wood and natural fibers. Her practice emphasizes slow, manual work and explores themes such as imperfection, emptiness, and vulnerability. She investigates the interaction of light with alabaster and the way erosion shapes sandstone. Her large-scale works are designed to foster public dialogue, reflecting on sustainability, presence, and silence. Botana has recently received two national awards and is participating in the 2025 Tuwaiq Sculpture Symposium in Saudi Arabia, furthering her commitment to public art and shared spaces.
«At Bonfire Online Residency, I found answers to long-held questions about contemporary art, money, and the boundary between the intimate and the public. Over two months, we created a space where respect, care, and support strengthened my artistic practice and encouraged creative exploration. This residency reminded me how deeply we need one another, and how mutual respect helps us build new structures for the artistic community.»
